The Stillwater Project is underlain by the Stillwater Complex – an Archean, layered, mafic to ultramafic, magmatic intrusive body exposed over a 47 by 8 km area, which contains significant layered deposits of nickel-copper-cobalt, chromium and PGE. The Stillwater project covers major strategic sections of parts of the Basal Series and the Ultramafic Series.

The Stillwater Complex has many similarities to the Bushveld Complex in South Africa, which accounts for most of the world’s PGE and significant amounts of chromium.
Both complexes have nickel-copper-cobalt deposits in the Lower or Basal zones, chromite seams within Ultramafic units and PGE-bearing reefs in lower sections of the Mafic Layered unit.
